Benefits of dieting in pregnancy
Proper nutrition and change of lifestyle can prevent excess overweight during pregnancy and help avoid unwanted consequences.
Under the supervision of a dietitian, pregnant women can safely limit their weight gain with diet and exercise interventions. Proper nutrition and physical activity can positively affect both the mother and her baby.
Is it safe to lose weight during pregnancy?
Overweight and obese women are at increased risk of pregnancy complications. Obesity has been associated with other pregnancy risks such as hypertension, gestational diabetes, anemia, high blood lipids (blood fats), and sometimes even congenital anomalies in offspring.
Similarly, there is the increased risk of induced labour, caesarean section, anaesthetic complications and wound infections. Bleeding after delivery is more common in overweight women than in pregnant women at a healthy weight. Also, urinal infections as well as genital infections are more common in overweight women. To minimize the risks, it is important to manage the weight gain during pregnancy, primarily by making the right nutritional choices.
What is the diet for pregnant women?
A pregnant woman should not gain more than 15 kilograms during the nine months of pregnancy, and it is advisable to watch for weight gain particularly in the first months of pregnancy, as it can lead to diabetes.
Also, she should do a glucose intolerance test at her gynaecologist’s who would recommend seeing a dietitian if necessary. The dietitian would monitor the expecting mom during pregnancy, as well as control her weight.
In order to prevent pregnancy overweight, the dietitian will prescribe a low-calorie diet – foods rich in proteins, minerals, vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids.
How often should a dietitian be visited during pregnancy?
If a pregnant woman is prone to obesity and she enters a program which is supervised by a dietitian, she should have checkups every 15 days. The dietitian would provide guidelines for recommended weight gain, control the weight, as well as the nutritive value of the food she consumes.
Does a pregnant woman need to be physically active?
If not prescribed otherwise by a gynaecologist, pregnant women should be physically active during pregnancy. Light walking as well as a controlled diet is recommended which can prevent unwanted weight gain.
What should a pregnant woman do if she has sugar cravings?
The Protekal Polyclinic offers a wide variety of healthy snacks including sweets that don’t increase weight gain.
The allowed intake of Protekal sweets is determined by a dietitian based on the overall health condition of the expecting mother.
